This painting has a richly textured background in earthy tones of copper, browns, antique bronze and gold, with a verdigris blue green patina resembling moss covered lava rock. The raised relief of the petroglyphs combined with the textured background create a beautiful 3D effect. It will add a distinctive Hawaiian theme and contemporary, tropical feel to your home and a touch of royalty to your walls!

Painted in my studio on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Signed and dated on the back.

The petroglyphs depicted are from the Puako petroglyph reserve in North Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. “Puako” can mean either “the tassel of the sugar cane” or “the flower of the Kou tree.” The Puako Petroglyph reserve is located north of Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii and contains one of Hawaii's largest collections of rock art with more than 3,000 designs identified, including sails canoes, tools, paddlers, marchers, dancers, family groups and a vast range of animals like dogs, cats, chickens, roosters goats, birds and turtles.

One of my favorite petroglyphs is the delightful little duckling (represented in this painting) where the artist has captured the waddling walk of a baby duck with just a few lines. Other deity symbols are almost ghost-like and ethereal and praying figures have a powerful presence. Puako themed paintings are representational of these fascinating, intriguing images.
