John Kelly came to Hawaii in 1953 with his wife, Katherine, to work with an advertising company. He fell in love with the hawaiian people and was a early advocate for their rights. During his life he produced numerous etchings and aquatints - highly sought after by print collectors today. Kelly's portraits depicting the life of the hawaiian people reflect his compassion for, and understanding of the aloha spirit. They were made as menu covers, mostly for the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and in Limited numbers for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in the early 1950's. Today they adorn the walls of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's elegant dining room.
